Qualcomm has unveiled a new platform for flagship smartphones – Snapdragon 888. The chip was announced at the annual Tech Summit Digital.
The novelty has received many changes and improvements that its predecessor, the Snapdragon 865, didn’t have. Improved CPU, GPU, neural processor, as well as signal coprocessors and integrated modem.
Why is Snapdragon 888 special?
During the annual tech summit, company announced the release of the new Snapdragon. It is expected to hit flagship phones in 2021. The Snapdragon 888 platform is built using a 5nm manufacturing process and will integrate a 5G modem, which the company says will be able to provide global 5G interoperability across all bands.
It will also support multi-SIM, SA, and dynamic spectrum utilization. The company says the new Snapdragon will bring a significant improvement in computational photography thanks to the Spectra ISP, which can take photos at 2.7 gigapixels per second, or about 120 12MP photos, making it 35% more powerful than the previous generation. The company also claims that the new platform will show a significant leap in the use of AI.
What is this new processor capable of?
Another feature of the new processor is the X60 5G modem built into the processor. Previously, smartphone manufacturers had to install the modem separately in their devices.
Thanks to the new Spectra 580 signal processor, the novelty can shoot simultaneously from three cameras. Burst volume has now been increased to 120fps. Also, smartphones with built-in Snapdragon 888 will record HDR video in 4K resolution in higher quality. Slow-motion at 960 frames per second in HD resolution is supported. Also, smartphones based on the new processor will be able to shoot 8K.
When can we see this in action?
More than a dozen companies are already planning to release flagship Android smartphones with this new processor in the future. As mentioned above, Xiaomi plans to present its first Snapdragon 888 phone to the public early next year.
